You know the phrase classically trained pianist ?
I am a classically trained photographer, numerous schools, assistant to one of the world’s most famous photographers, been involved all my life at every level of the craft.
Unsolicited advice is usually unwelcome, but here is mine.
Just go out there with a camera and express yourself. This is art at its purest form, an extension of your eye preserved and the only audience you need to impress is yourself.
Modern digital photography is a boon to exploring innate talent. We no longer need all the stuffy technical education to produce fine photographs.

Ira, I always enjoy your comments and advice! And you never fail to surprise me!
I think you will find this interesting. I am not seeking to learn photography as an artform, but rather a utility. I am taking on a project where photography is critical, at least from my point of view. I am at baseline not a good photographer and my technical skills are barely above nonexistent. I take pictures mostly to enhance my words in this blog usually just with a phone. The constraints of this project (a hopefully long term service endeavor) is that I need to photograph moving, largely uncontrollable and unpredictable, relatively small subjects, in a small poorly lit room (at least for photography) at night once a week. The room is lined with objects that I do not want to include in the background of the photographs. The subjects need to be realistic representations that showcase their unique features and qualities. My efforts over the last couple of months have led to highly edited versions of very poorly lit subjects against undesirable backgrounds. These photographs are passable, but not particularly good. I need to quickly master how to take great photos in this particular environment, and this includes self-teaching a hypercrash course in flash photography! I have a couple of speedlights, stands, and a controller on order to play with next… we’ll see how it goes!
OK, technical photography with strobes.
That lighting tends to be harsh with strong shadows.
You need to think about variety of bounce lighting, reflectors, crumpled aluminum foil, umbrellas.
Good thing that digital is here and you get to see results fast, not like the old days of liquid processing.
You do interesting stuff…
