Rob WA1UMU’s Rapid Deployment Radial System (RDRS) For Wolf River Coils Set-Up, aka “NEVER AGAIN! The Tangled Mess of Doom!”

May 23, 2021 by KM1NDY

I received the following email from Rob WA1UMU who is quickly becoming the eastern Massachusetts subject matter expert on the Wolf River Coils antenna system. As always, this is all of our own stuff…no one is sponsoring any of this! By now, anyone who does radio with me knows I am the wire-in-a-tree type. I have never seen the benefit of the portable vertical antenna. Especially when you have to set up a carpet of ground wires to make it work right. Rob’s results with his Wolf River Coils in various configurations for Parks-On-The-Air are inarguably successful though; see his maps below. Not to mention, he’s the reason I know about qsomap.org.

  • Castle Island K-6876
  • Spencer State Forest K-4713
  • Lake Dennison K-4745

So, when I received this email from Rob, I needed to share it (with his permission of course!) Of note, he made up the term Rapid Deployment Radial System for those of you who think you can just google this!

…AND THE RESULTS OF THE WOLF RIVER COILS RAPID DEPLOYMENT RADIAL SYSTEM (from a quick POTA test):

So thanks Rob WA1UMU for sharing this brilliant idea! Your portable antenna system is becoming an absolute work of art! Can’t wait to see it in action!
