Back In The SOTA Saddle: The Blackhead Mountain Range

September 1, 2025 by KM1NDY

One hundred of my 849 SOTA points are accounted for by five years of hiking Black Dome and Blackhead Mountains in the Catskills. We often stop near the trailhead to take a picture of this blown over tree. That is AA1F and Nellie in 2021.

I snapped a shot with Georgie hiding in the grass this time.

After five years of climbing this 6 1/2 mile, nearly 2500 vertical feet of elevation, 2-peak route to get our 20 SOTA points, the Blackhead Range in the Catskills has become one of our old friends. AA1F completes his activation on Blackhead.

A little selfie on the rocks to show I was there too…

We get back to Limey before the sun sets. We managed to get an early start for once. This was a perfectly peaceful trek along familiar trails. A bit of summer’s end bliss.

And a little reminder about old friends. Sometimes the things you really need to see have been hiding in plain sight.

Once upon a time,

KM1NDY
