I figured if I was going to destroy a perfectly good computer…it might as well be a $60 one…

Good for you! I’m about to do the same to an 11 year-old desktop I’ve kept alive with various “organ transplants.” I just splurged on a new PC, and was appalled at how blatantly both OSes and apps are moving towards “rent me forever” schemes as the new normal, not to mention “all your data is really mine.” Open source is the antidote to that. So Old Faithful will, silicon gods willing, have a second life as a Linux machine. Let us know how you get along with Mint.
I really can’t agree with you more on this. My last computer purchases were refurbs that had essentially all of the bloatware removed from them before they came to me. Such a pleasure. I am hoping I can make some heads or tails of Mint and I can someday stop bothering with the increasing glut of data thieves. I especially like your term “‘rent me forever’ schemes.” Very apt!
